Between rescue and ruin

Between rescue and ruin

I wish I could write only of victories.

Yesterday, Eastern Division managed to pull out two developers. For hours it felt like triumph. Then came the message: a third was lost. Not killed—we don’t know. But the extraction failed. The trace blinked out mid-operation, and the agents on the ground had to retreat.

One of the freed developers asked about her colleague again and again. “He was right behind me,” she kept saying. No answer we gave made sense to her.

This is the cost. Every rescue risks ruin. Every step forward could mean leaving someone behind.

I keep telling myself even one life matters. But tonight, I feel the weight of the one we couldn’t save more than the two we did.
